Summer time means camping and vacations. Here are 5 tips for towing a recreation vehicle.
We love to camp! Since we camp using a recreation vehicle, we call it glamping. With towing an RV out to the campground, we still have comforts of home while enjoying the great outdoors. We have owned 4 RVs over the years and have driven over 20,000 miles across the US and Canada. Luckily we've not had any accidents or injuries, but we've had our share of close calls. Camping in an RV is fun, there are steps you must take to make your trip safe and enjoyable.
Proper Tire Inflation - All the tires on your tow vehicle and trailer need to be properly inflated according to the manufacturer's specifications. Make sure the tread is good and that there are no cuts or worn spots.
Hitched Correctly - Your hitch should be sized correctly and the chains strong enough for the weight of your trailer. Check the state laws where you are traveling for rules about trailer brakes. Any hitch pins should be fully engaged. Make sure you crisscross the chains and your hitch ball is locked.
Lights Work - Test the lights on your trailer to make sure they are properly illuminated. This includes the brakes, turn signals, and running lights. I am the one that runs back and looks at the lights while my husband tests them. We check these each time we get moving after the car has been turned off.
Proper Visibility -It's important to be able to see our your tow vehicle and around your trailer when towing. Make sure you can see down the side of your trailer on both sides. Use mirror extenders if needed.
Routine Maintenance Up To Date - Check the age and wear on your engine belts, check the fluid levels, and make sure your wiper blades are in good condition. Get your oil changed regularly. Now through September 9th,
